President’s Message: HCJ at Work

April 2022 NewsDragon

Aloha HCJ Ohana!

I continue to be amazed at the good – no, great – work that our chapter Board of Directors and General Members put forth to better the lives of their loved ones, each other, and the community at large. Their excitement at each Board meeting and casual day-to-day conversations motivates me each day to seek more opportunities for them to shine in their own professions and interests.

One Director in particular comes to mind when I reflect on the positive energy that our HCJ members have. Colby Pacupac, despite being a relatively new member, took on the daunting task of coordinating not one but two large-scale projects that reach out into the community to bring awareness and financial support for the students that he mentors as an educator. His first-ever project with the HCJ was an extremely successful Zumbathon that brought together over a hundred members of the community and raised over $800 for his freshman class. His second ongoing project is a Savers FUNdrive event that seeks to continue raising funds for his class while putting unwanted items to good use. I admire the drive and the tireless work that he puts into improving the experience of his Pearl City High School freshman class of 2025, especially the students that do not have the financial resources to supplement their educational and social experiences as they prepare for college or their careers. At one point, Director Colby even introduced project management to his students and had them fill out Project Management Guides for their Freshman/Sophomore Banquet!

Our members have also been working hard! I had the opportunity to spend more time with many of them during last month’s New Member Orientation, graciously hosted by Ambassador and Past President Sarah Young. I left the orientation more educated myself with the history and “how-to’s” of the organization, and energized by the new creative ideas that many of our new members had after the orientation. Stay tuned for some of the new (or old!) projects that they may spearhead in the near future! And to Ambassador Sarah, thank you so, so much for your time and energy put into our new members; I couldn’t have asked for a better presenter. It was “actually good!” haha.

As we enter the month of April, I would like to extend a heartfelt mahalo for your continued support and readership. I encourage you to comb through this month’s Newsdragon and follow our social media channels and sign up for any event you’re interested in. In spirit of this year’s motto, “Yes, we CAN!” if you are interested in learning how to chair a project or are passionate about a certain cause, please feel free to reach out to myself or any member of the Board.

I look forward to another fun and productive month! Take care and hopefully we’ll see you at one of our upcoming events!-
